This is a biopic about how King George VI, the father of Queen Elizabeth II, overcame his stuttering problem. Widely considered by all but his father unfit to be king, George is reluctantly thrust unto the throne and into the spotlight after his brother is forced to abdicate. Overshadowed on the global stage by powerful orators like Adolph Hitler and Benito Mussolini, the King relies on the help of a little-known Australian speech therapist named Lionel Logue to find his voice and courageously lead his people into the most devastating war humanity has ever faced.
This is a powerful, hilarious and deeply moving story, told against the backdrop of a critical juncture in modern history, of the emergence of a deep friendship out of a professional relationship between two men who would otherwise never have socially interacted. The screenplay, written by David Seidler (who also wrote Tucker: The Man and his Dream), is excellent. The dry British wit is hilarious. I was literally slapping my knee during some of the scenes. Tom Hooper (Elizabeth I) does a superb job directing this movie. The buildup to the climactic finale is skillfully executed and prompted the audience to erupt into spontaneous applause. (Apparently, this also happened at the Roy Thomson Hall premiere.) Geoffrey Rush (Elizabeth: The Golden Age) does a fantastic job as Lionel Logue and Colin Firth (A Single Man) is excellent as King George VI.
I saw the second public screening of this movie at the Ryerson Theater during the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF).Tom Hooper was present to introduce the movie. He was joined by Colin Firth and Geoffrey Rush after the movie ended for a brief Q&A.
It turns out that David Seidler also had a stuttering problem as a child and drew inspiration from the kings struggle. Early in his career he wanted to write a screenplay about it. He dutifully asked the Queen Mother for permission. She agreed but told him not in my lifetime. Little did he know she would live to be 101 and he would have to wait another 30 years.
Another interesting tidbit we learned was that near the end of the shoot, the crew finally located one of Lionel Logues grandsons, who just so happened to live about 10 minutes away from the director. They got access to Lionels diaries and correspondence and managed to incorporate some of it into the script.
This movie is an unqualified must see.
Changjin Lake tells the story of resisting US aggression and aiding Korea. It tells the story of a volunteer company still guarding its position under ice and snow and making great contributions to the Changjin Lake campaign. The whole film is very shocking. Their frozen fragments perfectly show their spirit of returning to death.
Not just these people in the ice and snow Changjin lake. In history, China has changed from a country that was slaughtered by others to one of the best in the world. I think the important node of the transformation is a series of battles in which the weak won the strong during World War II. Yes, before that, there were many battles in history, such as the battle of Chibi, which is familiar to everyone. What is the difference between these battles and World War II? As we all know, in the era of World War II, the best weapon for killing people was firearms. Originally, a series of superb strategic commands such as burning, cutting, sword splitting, archery and grass boat borrowing arrows could be used to reverse the war situation. However, during World War II, there was no joint venture to let you burn, bullets could not be reused, and cold weapons gradually withdrew from the stage of history and replaced with guns one by one, Thats a gun. As a long-range weapon, gun also has super power. Whether it has or not often represents the trend of war. But Chinas broadsword team can also defeat Japanese troops with guns.
As an article in our Chinese textbook said, "I eat snow here just because the people of our motherland dont eat snow. I squat in the air raid shelter here, and the people of our motherland can not squat in the air raid shelter!"
As a minor in the 21st century. I cant imagine their mood, and I should never experience it. This is really a stable day for us brought by them and many of the same people in history.
In Changjin lake, watching the US Air Forces dimensionality reduction attack on North Korea, watching the United States eating meat, vegetables and coffee, and our most lovely people eating teeth cold potatoes and watching the heavy equipment of the US Army, my daughter and I cried because we all understood that this war is a difficult war and a war with huge costs and sacrifices, It is a war based on the flesh and blood of countless ancestors!
In Changjin lake, I cried watching American planes shoot our most lovely people. Watching our most lovely people raid the U.S. military in the battle of bombing the signal tower, I also cried. I cried when I saw the final general attack.
No matter Chinese or Americans, every soldier is an individual with parents, families and flesh and blood. Originally, our soldiers should go back to their hometown or build a house to support their parents or watch their children to guide their homework and return to ordinary tea, rice, oil and salt. Originally, American soldiers should prepare for Christmas reunion in their hometown.
However, the American decision-makers who launched the war sent American soldiers to the Korean battlefield, and we had to be involved in the war to protect our country, smash American ambitions and smash the illusion of Americas future March.
